The former England manager Discloses Priorities on Mentoring Young People Over Football Management
Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to duplicate the special mission he felt as England’s manager.
Southgate indicated his plan to dedicate his efforts toward working with the youth and addressing what he described as a dominant downbeat story presently existing in the country.
Pursuing Different Paths Outside of Football
In a recent radio interview, he was prompted regarding talk linking him with available jobs in the Premier League and abroad.
“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”
A Passion for Mentorship
Prior to the launch of his forthcoming publication, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for teenagers, utilizing experiences from his tenure as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.
The leader feels that his journey managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds general lessons.
“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”
Raising Children and Influencing Youth
Drawing on his family life, Southgate remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”
He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”
Unity Over Discord
He stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the societal attention often highlights division.
“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”
His new release, Dear England, is expected to offer additional perspectives on management and country pride based on his remarkable career.
