McLaren's Lando Norris Claims First Formula One World Title in Abu Dhabi Despite Verstappen's Race Victory.
With a performance full of nerveless racing, Lando Norris has won his maiden F1 world title by taking third place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. A podium was enough for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished first and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.
Norris executed exactly what was required in an incredibly intense race at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a number of audacious overtakes, with impeccable execution from both himself and his McLaren squad.
A Historic Accomplishment for Britain and The Team
By winning his first world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh British driver to achieve this. This ends McLaren's title wait, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.
It represents a incredible turnaround for the Woking-based outfit, from a nadir in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the standings. This resurgence has been led by team principal Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an efficient team with a very fast car.

The Story of the Teammates
Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had been the favorite for much of the campaign, there was clear disappointment at faltering in the final third. Several of poor performances and mistakes, including crashing out in Baku, were expensive. However, he finishes the season having shown he is too world champion material. Being so fast in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains a huge achievement.
Max Verstappen was also brilliant to force the title battle down to the last race. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a significant deficit in August, he did not quite have the points to overhaul Norris, ending up just two points short.
Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Execution
Norris closed out his success with clinical focus to take the crown that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the last two rounds. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.
This represents a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult times, believing they would return to the top. That faith was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.
Norris performed a hugely impressive job to stick at his task, maintaining his composure and belief during periods under pressure. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he still worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Decisive Race
At the start, Verstappen held his lead through turn one, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to pass the outside of Norris to claim second place.
It showed the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris come out into traffic, but he passed rivals quickly and showed great composure in his driving.
On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to overtake two cars at once, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. The rival team told their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside line, almost completely off the track.
This moment was looked at by the stewards, with several impossibly tense laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris was decided. This bold move unimpeded was vital to his title fight.
Contrasting Fortunes
While Norris became the first British driver to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.
His first season with the Scuderia had been greeted with excitement but has yielded what was easily his most challenging year ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a podium. He has looked weary in the final rounds and will aim to reset over the off-season.
