Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's historic comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to Denver hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the player and his coach.
